ART AND CULTURE IN THE LANGHE

Alba 2027: the Langhe as a cultural destination

Why the Langhe are also becoming a cultural destination

The Langhe have always been a destination capable of evoking precise images: neat hills, rows of vines that change color with the seasons, villages and narrow streets, great wines and generous tables.

In recent years, however, this territory has begun to tell another part of itself: the one linked to art, contemporary research, and new cultural languages.

The proclamation of Alba Italian capital of contemporary art 2027 confirms this evolution. It is not just a prestigious title, but an opportunity to look at the Langhe from a new perspective: no longer just a food and wine destination, but also a place of culture, creativity, and experimentation.

Alba Italian capital of contemporary art 2027: a recognition for the whole territory

Alba won the title of Italian capital of contemporary art 2027 with the project “The wind factories”, a dossier that focuses on the relationship between art, landscape, community, and cultural development. The candidacy does not only concern the city, but ideally involves a wider territory: the Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato.

It is an important step because it recognizes Alba’s cultural vocation that is rooted in its history, but firmly looks to the future. Contemporary art thus becomes a tool to create connections: between the urban center and the hills, between memory and innovation, between those who live in the territory every day and those who discover it during a trip.

The wind factories: the cultural project of Alba 2027

The title of the project, “The wind factories”, recalls the work and imagery of Pinot Gallizio, an artist from Alba among the most original figures of the Italian twentieth century. Gallizio was one of the protagonists of the Situationist International and is also remembered for his “industrial painting”, a radical and visionary research that left a deep mark on the history of contemporary art.

Alongside Gallizio, the project also pays tribute to Roberto Longhi, another central name in the culture of Alba and Italy, among the most authoritative art historians of the twentieth century.

Alba 2027 therefore stems from a double root: on the one hand, the avant-garde, on the other, study and critique. Two different souls, but perfectly consistent with the identity of a territory used to bringing tradition and transformation together.

The Langhe biennale: art, landscape, and community

One of the most interesting elements of the program is the birth of the Langhe biennale, conceived as a platform for production, exhibition, and research. The goal is to give life to an event capable of lasting over time, transforming 2027 not into an isolated event, but into the beginning of a broader cultural journey.

The Langhe biennale could become an opportunity to discover works, installations, exhibitions, and widespread projects in dialogue with the landscape.

Why the Langhe are a cultural destination

When talking about the Langhe, the first thought often goes to wine. Barolo, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Alta Langa: names that tell of a culture made of work in the vineyard, time, care, and knowledge.

But precisely this attention to the landscape and production has made the Langhe a particularly suitable place to host contemporary cultural experiences as well.

The vineyard landscape of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014. This means that we are not faced with a simple “beautiful to see” scenery, but with a cultural landscape: a territory shaped over time by the relationship between man, nature, agriculture, and productive knowledge.

Contemporary art, in this context, does not arrive as an extraneous element, but as a new language to read what already exists.

Contemporary art among Alba, Langhe, and Roero

Alba 2027 fits into a territory where contemporary art has already found important places. The Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, with its presence between Turin and Guarene, is one of the most significant examples: a cultural project that for years has supported artists, exhibitions, productions, and new forms of participation.

Even the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo art park, on the Roero hills, demonstrates how the dialogue between artwork and landscape can become a powerful experience.

Visiting an installation surrounded by greenery, walking along a path among hills and sculptures, observing the territory with different eyes: these are experiences that broaden the way of experiencing a holiday in the Langhe.

From tasting to exhibition: a new way to travel in the Langhe

The strength of the Langhe lies in the possibility of building very different days from each other, without ever losing the thread of the territory. A morning can begin with a walk through the vineyards, continue with a visit to Alba or a historic village, move on to a contemporary exhibition or installation, and conclude with a tasting or a private dinner.

One does not come to the Langhe just to “see something”, but to enter into a rhythm: that of nature, cuisine, wine, art, and the encounter with places and people.

Staying in Barolo to discover Alba and the cultural Langhe

Choosing Barolo as a base for a trip to the Langhe means being in the center of one of the most iconic landscapes in the world, but also in a convenient position to reach Alba and the other cultural sites of the territory.

From here it is possible to alternate moments of discovery with moments of quiet, leaving room for both visits and the pleasure of returning to a cozy and panoramic place.

Vineho was born precisely with this idea of hospitality: independent apartments among the vineyards, privacy, comfort, well-kept services, and the possibility of building a tailor-made stay. After a day among exhibitions, villages, wineries, and hills, returning to an apartment with a private patio overlooking the vineyards means continuing to experience the landscape even during moments of rest.

The Langhe beyond wine: culture, nature, and well-being

The recognition of Alba as the Italian capital of contemporary art 2027 does not change the identity of the Langhe: it enriches it.

Wine remains a fundamental element, as does the cuisine, truffles, villages, and the beauty of the landscape. But alongside all this, a cultural offering is growing that is capable of attracting curious travelers and art enthusiasts.

For those who love to travel without rushing, 2027 will be a special year to discover Alba and the Langhe with a new gaze. An opportunity to let oneself be surprised by a territory that never stops evolving, where contemporary culture meets the land, memory, and the everyday beauty of the hills.
